Evolution of a mediocre painting

So I'm taking this workshop: Get Your Paint On

Our first assignment was to do something based on these kinda crazy quilts...and of course my mind jumped to log cabin quilts (and knitted blankets, which is what I have more experience with...though I've never really knit log cabin anything, to the best of my recollection.)

And this is what I came up with...

I considered stopping here because I really liked it, but I wanted to see what would happen with all the colors... and apparently I stopped taking progress shots at this point.

Hooray!

More accurate colors but an uglier picture (and frankly I wish the colors were more like the one above):

GYPO Week 1

It has some issues... some colors I don't like, some sloppy brushwork, and frankly it's a tad boring for my tastes (maybe if it were way, way bigger....) But seeing as I haven't painted a damn thing since I dropped out of art school about 5 years ago and that it was my weakest subject even then, I'm fairly content with it for now. I like the actual act of painting, it's pleasant (though the smell makes me nauseous after awhile, even though acrylics are pretty nontoxic. Blerg. I should probably stop holding my face six inches from the paintbrush.) Anyway. Painting! I don't know if I'll post my assignment from each week... we'll see how much I like them ;-)
